How to Choose an Angle Grinder?

How to Choose an Angle Grinder?

An angle grinder is a handheld tool that has a variety of uses.

It can be used for polishing, buffing, sharpening, grinding and smoothing out the rough edges on masonry. It is also used in auto repair, workshops, and construction sites.

Choosing an angle grinder could be challenging because there are a lot of things to consider before settling on one type rather than the other.

When choosing an angle grinder, you need to consider the following:

1. Types of Angle Grinders

The type of angle grinder you choose depends on the job you are going to perform.

There are many types of angle grinders; namely, electric-powered, battery-powered, compressed air powered or pneumatic angle grinder, and Petrol powered angle grinder.

Electric powered angle grinders are the most common type of angle grinders in the market. They have an electric motor that spins the disc, which is connected to a power cord.

Battery-powered angle grinders are not connected to a power cord. They only need batteries that need to be charged. This type of angle grinders is most suitable for working outdoors because it is portable.

The compressed air powered or pneumatic angle grinders provide huge power to any kind of job and can spin the disc at higher rates.

Finally, Petrol powered angle grinders are used when there is a need for cordless functionality. They need to be handled with extra care to make sure that there is no leakage of fuel. They are bigger in size and suitable for huge industries.

2. Safety

Angle grinders could be very dangerous if not handled properly and with caution. An angle grinder could cause many injuries because its main job is to cut and grind. In order to make sure you do not get injured, you need to buy an angle grinder with a side handle.

Side handles provide stability and make the machine easy to use for both right and left-handed people. You can also look for the anti-vibration feature, which makes using the machine for a long period of timeless exhausting.

Moreover, getting an angle grinder with an adjustable guard or protective cover can help you turn the guard around easily and protect yourself from debris.

3. Size/ Weight

You need to determine the work you need the angle grinder for in order to know what disc size to buy (the size of the angle grinder is determined by the size of its disc only).

Large disc size is ideal for tough jobs; whereas, a small disc size is more precise, easier to handle, and better for small jobs and curved finishes. No matter what size of disc you decide to go for, make sure to check that the arbor diameter of the disc matches that of your grinder.

Speaking of weight, grinders come in different weights depending on their model. You should choose a weight that you are comfortable with.

The size and weight are very important factors to consider because they determine the comfort of the angle grinder.

4. Motor Power

Angle grinders have different voltages, wattage, and amp. People usually love to buy an angle grinder with power ranging from 110 to 230 volts AC and wattage ranging from 500 to 2500 watts. You should also consider the amp, which can be from 4 to 15.

This means that before buying an angle grinder, you need to consider what you need it for. If you need it for a household task, go for a low rating machine, but if you are a professional, you should buy a heavy-duty machine in order to work on many projects with ease.

5. Speed

A handheld grinder usually has discs that make around 5,000 to 10,000 revolutions per minute. It goes without saying that the more the number of revolutions, the more effective and powerful the grinder is.

However, there is no need to buy an angle grinder with high speed if you do not need it. The speed you should go for depends on why you need an angle grinder. If it is for cutting wood, get a low speed around 2000 rpm, and if it is for cutting heavier metal, get an angle grinder of speed around 5000-7000 rpm.

It is better to check if the angle grinder has a soft start when it is switched on because such angle grinders are easier to handle.

6.Wheels and Accessories

The discs and wheels of angle grinders can be interchanged. There are various types of wheels and and brush attachment styles available in the market, so you should read the packaging and usage guides to make sure you choose the correct product that is most suitable for you.

Final Thoughts

As mentioned before, choosing an angle grinder could be a hectic process, but once you determine the exact type of work you need the angle grinder for, choosing a suitable angle grinder will be a piece of cake.

My name is John Graham, a 32-year old avid DIY-er. Ever since I was young, my father used to prompt me to help fix things around the house or even building my own cupboards and shelves. That’s why I developed the habit of doing everything on my own. And since this is the only way to reach the unique results I really want, I don’t like depending on any services. With all the projects I’ve worked on, I’ve gained a lot of experience and wanted to gather it all in one place. And that’s where the idea to create “Tool Dizer” dawned on me, and here I am trying to connect with all the DIY enthusiasts out there.
